Students at Stevenson University are devoting a
full day to help make a difference and give back to the community. On Saturday, October 3, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., students will be
reaching out to lend a hand on local community projects for “Building Community Day.”
Four-hundred
students will participate throughout the day at six locations. Depending on the
students’ assignments, they will be planting trees, removing invasive plant species,
cleaning, and harvesting fruits and vegetables that will be donated to local
food shelters.
“Building
Community Day is not only a wonderful way to give back to the community, but it
is also a way to show love and humble our hearts to those who deserve it,” said
senior business communication major, Maya
Shipley.
Some of the community
organizations that will be helped include the Southeast Community Development
Corporation, Irvine Nature Center, Civic Works/REACH! School, Fresh Farm
Fruits, Edison Neighborhood Corporation, and Highlandtown Merchants
Association.
“Part of Stevenson
University’s core mission is service to the community,” said Chris Noya, Assistant Vice President for Experiential
Learning and Career Services. “Through Building Community Day and
other service events throughout the year, students become more aware
of the world around them and of the value of being involved, caring
citizens. This day will bring SU students, faculty, and staff together in the spirit
of community and service.”
