Prestigious Awards Presented to Graduating Seniors

Villa Julie College, now known as Stevenson University, announced its annual student awards at a Baccalaureate ceremony on May 13. Student awards are determined by a panel of faculty and staff.

The Orsia F. Young Leadership Award was presented to six individuals from the class of 2008. This award is presented to graduating seniors who have performed in an outstanding manner in the college community, and recognizes, in perpetuity, the valuable contributions of Orsia F. Young ’79, who served the College as a faculty member and senior administrator from 1987 to 2003. The recipients were:

  • Allison Barry of White Hall. Barry received a bachelor’s degree in Paralegal Studies on May 16. She is a graduate of North Harford High School and the daughter of James and Barbara Barry.
  • Casey Cochran of Elkton. Cochran received a bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems on May 16. He is a graduate of Elkton High School and the son of Steve Cochran and Margaret Phipps.
  • Kathy Darr of Edgemere. Darr received a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education on May 16. She is a graduate of Sparrows Point High School and the daughter of Dave and Barb Darr.
  • Trevor Hanlon of Joppa. Hanlon received a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration on May 16. He is a graduate of Archbishop Curley High School and the son of Linda and Bill Wegmann.
  • Amy Walsh of Baltimore. Walsh received a bachelor’s degree in Applied Math on May 16. She is a graduate of Loch Raven High School and the daughter of William and Frances Walsh.
  • Ashley Johnson of Glen Burnie. Johnson received a bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology on May 16. She is a graduate of Seton Keough High School and the daughter of Sherri and Roy Johnson.


White Hall resident Lindsay Koepper was awarded The Marion and Henry J. Knott Achievement Award. This award is presented to a graduating senior who has demonstrated the ability to achieve academically, to reach out to the needs of others at the college, and to persevere toward a goal while also managing major primary responsibilities outside college life. Koepper received a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry on May 16. She is a graduate of North Harford High School and the daughter of Mary and Joseph Koepper.

Bel Air resident Lauren Humphries was awarded The Elizabeth McWethy Award. This award is presented to a student who has performed and achieved in an outstanding manner, developed creative potential, manifested genuine concern for others, and has been a significant influence on others. Humphries received a bachelor’s degree in Business Communications on May 16. She is a graduate of the John Carroll School and the daughter of Wayne and Susan Humphries.

Lagos, Nigeria, resident Chuka Didigu was awarded The Dean’s Award for Exceptional Scholarship. This award is presented to a graduating senior who has performed academically in an exceptional way, has demonstrated unique intellectual ability and initiative, and has contributed to the academic pursuits of his or her peers. Didigu received a bachelor’s degree in Biology on May 16.

Ellicott City resident Caitlin Nicholas was awarded The John Mitchell Award in honor of the late John R. Mitchell, Adjunct Instructor in Philosophy. This award is presented to a graduating senior who best exemplifies the qualities of scholarship, civility, and service which characterized the life of John Mitchell. Nicholas received a bachelor’s degree in Business Communications on May 16. She is a graduate of the Seton Keough High School and the daughter of Bill and Agnes Nicholas.

Owings Mills resident Angela Harris received the VJ Pin, the most comprehensive honor the College confers on a graduating student whose total personal performance is meritorious, including academic achievement, independence and integrity of thought and action, reliability, respect for others, and involvement in college or community affairs. Harris received a bachelor’s degree in Business Communications on May 16. She is a graduate of Towson High School and the daughter of Maumi Cannell-Chatterton.
