Stevenson University Receives Biomedical Sciences Affiliate Grant
April 03, 2007

The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) has awarded Stevenson University a Biomedical Sciences Affiliate Grant and selected the University to be the state's University Affiliate for the new Project Lead The Way (PLTWTM ) Biomedical Sciences Program.

PLTW, a nonprofit organization, has a pre-engineering program in more than 1,750 schools in 46 states, the District of Columbia, and the United Kingdom. In response to looming shortage of qualified science and health professionals, PLTW is launching a new biomedical sciences curriculum for high schools. Maryland is one of two states in the nation to establish affiliate universities for the PLTW Biomedical Sciences program.

The teacher training will take place this summer at Stevenson University. In the fall, those teachers will return to schools in Baltimore City and Anne Arundel, Carroll, Cecil, Charles, Frederick, Harford, Montgomery, and Washington counties to share what they have learned with their students. The Biomedical Sciences program, among the first in the nation, will initially consist of four courses. The lessons will be designed to engage students in rigorous and relevant hands-on problems related to the human body, genetics, and diseases.

"We are very pleased to partner with MSDE and PLTW to establish the Biomedical Sciences University Affiliate at Stevenson University," said Susan Gorman, Division Director of Science and Mathematics at Stevenson University and PLTW Biomedical Sciences Affiliate Director. "We have a rich history of providing high quality, career-oriented educational programs at the University, and we appreciate this new opportunity to work with our partners to contribute to improving science education and workforce development."
